Rugby World Cup Bids - Just As Much Legacy As Occasion

South America’s 2035 Rugby World Cup bid promises an unforgettable spectacle. Before people are swept along by the romance, we should ask what the tournament would leave behind and who would carry the cost.

Playing rugby at the Maracanã would be an extraordinary image. A Rugby World Cup final before a crowd of 101,000 at Buenos Aires’ Monumental would be another. The South American bid has understood the power of the grand gesture. Its proposed venues (eight in Argentina, with one each in Brazil, Chile and Uruguay) offer scale, colour and a new chapter in the tournament’s history.

There is a serious sporting case for taking the competition there. Argentina have long since earned their place among the leading rugby nations; Uruguay and Chile have made the World Cup and are building their own profiles; Brazil has a large population and a growing game.
