The 22nd of September, 2015: Kevin McLaughlin is forced to retire.
Kevin McLaughlin had come through a bad patch. Just shy of three weeks before his enforced retirement was announced, John O’Sullivan had an interview with him in The Irish Times. It was almost a cathartic exercise for the flanker to express the tough ride he had endured.
Hernias and shoulder reconstruction had left him with quite the up and down battle to return to playing. His international teammates were gearing up for their opening World Cup encounter at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff against Canada. He wasn’t long out from a comfortable pre-season win over the second-tier English side Moesley.
